The accolades continue to come in for Roberts Creek’s Kyla Richey.

Last week, Volleyball BC announced several inductees to its inaugural class to the Volleyball BC Hall of Fame, including Richey’s 2009/10 University of British Columbia women’s team, which recorded a perfect 25-0 season and won its third national championship in a row.

“That year was a very, very special year,” Richey said. “We had an extremely close team that year and we had a lot of success. If you look at the roster that year, we had some very talented and high calibre athletes. A large chunk of us would continue with the national team in the summer. What made us so good is that we just put our heads down, made no excuses, and worked our butts off every single day.”

Richey said what she loved about the team was that no one took anything for granted.

“We knew that any team could come out on fire and beat us — we just had to focus on ourselves and play as hard as we could, regardless of who was on the other side of the net,” she said. “We all had the same goals, the same work ethic and the same love for our team. Every single person had such a large and influential role and we all bought into that. That, and our hard work, made us so successful.

“I want to thank Volleyball BC for the recognition and the honour to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. That’s definitely a year I will never forget.”

The inaugural Hall of Fame induction will be held at the Volleyball BC Hall of Fame and Awards Banquet on Saturday, Jan. 10.
