Richey named to Team Canada

Roberts Creek's Kyla Richey will again be wearing national colours this summer.

Fresh off her first pro experience with SC Potsdam in Germany, the University of British Columbia grad and five-time national champion has been named to the national team for 2013.

Volleyball Canada made the announcement last week and selected the 24-member squad following a month-long tryout in May under head coach Arnd Ludwig.

The Canadian team will compete at three international events this summer: the Pan Am Cup in Lima, Peru, June 8 to 17, the World University Games in Kazan, Russia, July 6 to 16 and the NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean) Cham-pionships in Omaha, Nebraska, Sept. 14 to 22.

Team Canada will also host a Canada Cup/Exhibition Series in Winnipeg from Aug. 19 to 23.

I'm just really happy to be here this summer back with my friends and former UBC teammates, said Richey. Taking the summer off last year for some medical things, I'm really excited for this tournament to start and get back on the court with Team Canada.

She said the end of her first pro season ended well.

Richey's team played two of her Team Canada teammates (Janie Guimond and Becky Pavan) in a do-or-die series that Potsdam won 2-0 in a best of three-game series. The team had lost both times against this team during the year, so that was a great achievement, she said.

We then went into the quarter finals playing Schwerin that was ranked number one in Germany and are also playing in Champions League, so they were very good. We ended up winning the first game, which was huge. People kept coming up and telling me after the game how big of a deal this was and no other team had done this. We ended up losing the second game and then the third and deciding game, but we definitely turned some heads and we were getting a lot more respect from teams that weren't giving us as much at the beginning of the year.

It was a good experience and so great to make it into playoffs during my first professional stint.
