Suncoast Racquet Club's Tennismania saw players of all ages and abilities participating last weekend.

Seventeen teens hit the ball to music, youngsters ages seven to 12 received free lessons, and non-members played for free and met club members.

A Sunday afternoon exhibition match on Oct. 3, featuring some of B.C.'s best young tennis players, highlighted the weekend. There was lots of cheering as Halfmoon Bay's Madison Shoemaker, a local rising star, as well as Yumi Karishoei, Todd Fought and Ryan Koo displayed some terrific techniques in doubles matches. All four are ranked highly in the U18 category. Madison competes throughout North America and is currently ranked number three in her age category.

"It was inspiring to see such a high level of skills and sportsmanship during the mixed doubles match," said club pro Jacques Joyal.

The club thanks Claytons Heritage Market and Saffron Restaurant for donating some delicious food.

Non-members are encouraged to take advantage of free tennis times during October. Friday drop-in mixed doubles welcome non-members on Oct. 15 and 22 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 23, non-members are invited to play from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Sunday drop-in mixed doubles, Oct. 17 and 24 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. will be opportunities for non-members to play with hitters from the club.

Tennismania also continues this month. October specials at the club are for a three-month trial membership or 50 per cent off the initiation fee for a full-time membership. Beginner players receive eight hours of free lessons. Non-members can enter a draw for a free three-month trial membership.
