Racing gets the green light

It was a busy winter for the executive of the Sunshine Coast Drag Racing Association (SCDRA) as they were working overtime to ensure drag racing became a reality in 2013 at the Sechelt airport.

Late in March, the airport development advisory committee (ADAC) recommended drag racing continue this year and Sechelt council gave the final stamp of approval.

There are five race dates on the books for 2013 and SCDRA members are gearing up for a test 'n' tune on Saturday, May 25, and public racing on Sunday, May 26. Race classes include: street machine, super street, street rod, hot rod and exhibition.

For the May 26 race to lure more racers out from the backwoods of the Sunshine Coast and to bring some Lower Mainland cars up to the Coast, several big cash incentives are up for grabs. Prize money of $1,000 will be awarded to the racer with the lowest ET in eliminations and another $1,000 to the driver with best reaction time in eliminations.

In the spirit of supporting the community, several members of the SCDRA are working on an automotive project with the administration and teachers at Elphinstone Secondary School. The school has joined the British Columbia High School Motorsport Association and up to two dozen enthusiastic students are preparing a couple of donated cars to race. If all goes well, these cars and students will make their debut at the races on May 25 and 26.

Other SCDRA event dates are test 'n' tunes on Saturday, June 15, and Sunday, Sept. 15, and the big summer race during the Festival of the Rolling Arts on Sunday, Aug. 11.
