Some of the top senior men's curlers from around the province called Gib-sons home last weekend for the B.C. region 11 Lower Mainland provincial qualifier.
After three days of play between the 15 teams, the Craig Lepine foursome (Lepine, Stan Walker, Berry Burton, Craig McLeod and alternate Glenn Campbell) from the Langley Curling Club was the A event qualifier. The Rick Pughe foursome (Pughe, John Zwarych, Fred Cleutinx and Craig Lightbody) from the Royal City Curling Club won the B event and the Mel Steffin foursome (Steffin, Christopher Wilcock, Curtis Bogren and Pierre Gallant) from the Royal City Curling Club won the C event.
The three qualifying teams will be travelling to Trail in mid-February to compete in the provincial playdowns for a chance to play in the nationals.
The curling was very good, lots of close games and excellent shot making, said club spokesperson Juanita Wannamaker. The players were very pleased with the excellent condition of the ice. Thanks to our ice make Jared Wannamaker for working such long hours to make that happen and to all the volunteers who came out to help. The teams also complimented our club on our hospitality.
Thanks also to Nadine Lowden and her volunteers for having the kitchen open for the weekend so the teams could grab something quick to eat between games. Without our club volunteers, we would not be able to host an event like this.
This weekend there will be 30 teams in Gibsons for the mens open bonspiel. The public is welcome to drop by the club and watch some curling.
