University of Victoria Vikes fifth year Kendra Pomfret has been honoured as the women’s CIS cross-country student-athlete community service winner.

Pomfret has returned to the Vikes after taking the 2013 season off due to injury, but has not looked back since her recovery.

The Roberts Creek native, who is studying sociology and social justice, has been one of the top runners in every competition so far this season.

Pomfret finished fourth in Bellingham at the Western Washington Classic, racing in 21:28 to help her team to a third-place finish. In Palo Alto at the Stanford Invitational, Pomfret was the top Vike to help the women take first place in the six-km race.

Pomfret is no stranger to acknowledgement, as the current captain was previously named the 2013 UVic Chancellor’s Cup recipient for athletic excellence and community service, while she was also a 2013 CIS First Team All-Canadian for track, a member of the record-breaking 4x800-m team in 2013, and she earned a CIS bronze in the 1000-m. Pomfret was also a Canada West First Team All-Star in 2012 in cross-country.

Outside of her impressive athletic resume, Pomfret works weekly with a 10-year-old boy who has severe autism and motor skill challenges, has been co-president of the Vikes varsity council for three seasons now and also volunteers with Recreation Integration Victoria.

Pomfret is also helping grow her sport serving as an assistant coach and mentor for a local high school cross-country team at Oak Bay Secondary School.

There is no shortage of participation for Pomfret, who has also been a part of the 5th Estate Missing Women’s case, helping in ethnographic research with fellow criminology students and the CBC. An active participant and organizer for the Vikes Run for the Cure team and a pivotal student-athlete contributor to the growing Vikes Nation Steering Committee at UVic, Pomfret is continually being involved. She has captained the Vikes women’s cross-country and track team since 2012 and is undoubtedly a great depiction of a dedicated student athlete who contributes to the community.

“Kendra is a great leader on the team with both her athletic achievements, as well as her community service,” said Vikes head coach Brent Fougner.
