The Sunshine Coast Rapids peewee C lacrosse team finished another great season at the provincial championships last weekend in Richmond.

It was the second straight year the team made it to provincials, winning a medal last year in Kamloops. Tough competition last weekend saw the Rapids play well, but they just missed out on a chance to advance to the medal round.

After a regular season record of 14-3-1, the Rapids drew into the second four-team pool with Saanich, Shuswap and host Richmond.

The Rapids fell behind 7-3 to Shuswap in its first game, but clawed back in the third period, only to fall 8-7.

Game two against Richmond was a different story as the Rapids dominated, winning 14-3.

The other pool of four included the only two teams to beat the Rapids all season, Port Coquitlam and Abbotsford, plus West Kootenay and Penticton. No one dominated in the pool, with each losing at least a game, meaning six teams were still in the hunt for the medal round.

Needing a win over Saanich in its final game, the Rapids pulled out all the stops.

Saanich had the upper hand leading, 4-1 at the end of the first period, but the Rapids bounced back to tie the game 4-4 after two.

The Rapids continued to pour it on, leading 7-5 with five minutes remaining, but Saanich fought hard and pulled out an 8-7 win, ending the Rapids’ tournament.

The tournament named Harrison Ratcliff to its all-star team while Tyson Chidgey was presented with a warrior fair play award.

The Rapids should be proud of their efforts all season long.
