The Sunshine Coast peewee rep Blues recently finished their season capturing their flight banner and an overall record of 21-3-2.

The Blues started the year with a strong showing at the Abbotsford Icebreaker tournament in October and won the Vancouver Canucks charity tournament in December.

All teams within a tier compete for a spot in the provincials, which often means competing with teams far above your level.

In February, the Blues travelled to Whistler to play a sudden death game that would send them into the final eight (of 21 teams) or down to the consolation finals. Whistler was fast and the players had to adjust their play quickly.

Kolton Cousins opened up the scoring with an unassisted beauty and led the team with his physical style of play.

Whistler answered back as their talented captain slid one past goalie Geo Wilson. Andrew Hunt pinched in the second period and buried it to take the lead, with assists from Kai Gerler and Grayson Bush.

Whistler scored to tie the game, but the Blues hunkered down.

Going into the third, the Blues knew they would have to finish their checks and be more physical if they were going to win the game. The officials were on the homeside with the penalty minutes very lopsided. The play was back and forth as Kolton drove to the net on a pass from Andrew and buried the winning goal.

Once in the top eight, the Blues had to face the Burnaby Winter Club in a four-point series.

Beaten in two straight, gritty games, the Blues found themselves competing for the President's Series banner. With a win over Semiahmoo at home, the team travelled to West Van. At the end of a chippy game, the score was tied and the Blues were in a good spot with one win and one tie.

The last game was held at the North Shore Winter Club.

Kai Gerler used his speed and agility to bury the first goal and energize the team. North Shore answered back, but Kai surged ahead once again and caught their defence flat footed to take the team ahead once again.

Once again, North Shore answered back. At this point, one of the North Shore players made a bad decision and pounded Ty Stinchcombe with a dirty hit to the chin that took him out of the game.

Grayson Bush and Austin Fournier filled in at centre and skated miles, the defence played extremely well with Noah Spain, Adam Goepel and Andrew Hunt working together and being patient with the puck.

Not in the mood to settle for a tie, Treven Reid worked hard in front of the net to jam one in with hard working help from Austin Fournier.

To finish them off, Treven tossed in another one in the dying minutes to capture the banner with the Blues finishing fifth out of 21 teams.
