The Howe Sound Iron Outrigger Races returns to Gibsons this weekend (Aug. 9/10).

The 13th bi-annual Howe Sound Iron Outrigger Iron race is here again.

Paddlers from Ontario, Alberta, B.C., California and the Pacific Northwest will be bringing their canoes to race the beautiful waters of Gibsons.

Organizers are expecting more than 250 paddlers here this weekend, Aug. 9 and 10. The start of each race can be viewed from the government wharf in Gibsons starting with the first race at 8 a.m.

Matt Morris from CKAY will be announcing the women’s race starting at 10 a.m. and the men’s race at 1:30 p.m. Following the races the awards and dinner for paddlers only will happen at Dougall Park.

Part of giving back includes the Howe Sound Iron Race committee donating part of the race registration fees to the Cohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada. The cheque will be presented during the award dinner.

On Sunday, expect to see many colourful single outriggers participating in the single and double canoe race starting at 9 a.m. again at the government wharf.

The sponsorships from so many businesses have helped make this international canoe race so successful. This includes Town of Gibsons, BC Ferries, Gibsons Marina, Tim Hortons, and many more local businesses that have donated prizes.
