Novice teams bring home hardware

Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association

On the Dec. 5 weekend, three Sunshine Coast novice teams travelled to Powell River to compete in their annual hockey tournament.

The Leafs, Canucks and Senators were all excited for their first tournament of the year and anticipating some strong competition from Powell River, Comox and Cowichan Valley.

The first day of the tournament was a good one for all three teams. The kids were energized and playing well. Saturday ended with the Senators undefeated at 3-0, the Leafs undefeated at 2-0 and the Canucks 1-1.

Sunday started bright and early, with the Leafs losing to Comox Valley, the Canucks taking a win over Powell River Tempco and the Senators continuing their winning streak over Powell River Investors. All three teams played hard, and it was a huge celebration when they announced that all three teams were off to the medal round.

The bronze medal game was between the Leafs and Canucks. Nothing like hometown rivalry to make for an exciting game! Both teams wanted this win, and the score went back and forth with the crowd on the edge of their seats. The Leafs pulled out the 9-6 win.

The Senators played Comox Valley in the gold medal game. These kids played their hearts out, and left everything they had on the ice. Comox squeaked by with a 3-2 win.

All 32 players played hard and made the Sunshine Coast proud. The teams want to thank Tim Hortons, their generous team sponsor ,and the community who helped support their fundraising efforts.
