Three new amateur golf champions were crowned last weekend at the Sechelt Golf and Country Club.

Mike McAleer fired rounds of 76 and 77 for a two-day total of 153 and a three-stroke win over Jim Goodwin to win the men’s title and have his name placed on the newly named Connor Richey memorial trophy.

In the senior men’s division, Brian Brawley finished with rounds of 77 and 81 for a 158 total, good for a four-stroke win over Richard Godfrey, who finished in second spot.

In the women’s division, Avery Struck fired rounds of 83 and 80 for a 163 total. She was nine strokes clear of the field with Marla Taylor her closest rival with a 172 total.

A field of 25 contested the men’s division, another 16 in the senior men’s and nine in the women’s division.

Head pro Mike Hobson said he was very pleased with the event.

“The course was in the best shape it has ever been in,” Hobson said. “The greens were fast and the course set up on Sunday was tough, and I think that reflected in the scores. It was difficult but fair, and we have really good feedback on the layout.”

Hobson said it was the first major tournament held at the club since the redesign of the bunkers and the smaller greens.

“I think everyone enjoyed the added competitiveness of the course and it reflected in the higher scores than in years past,” he said. “We are honoured to carry on Connor’s name by naming the trophy after him. I think the tournament will continue to be competitive as more people will strive to get their name on the trophy alongside Connor’s.”
