More than 60 Coast dragon-boaters spent Aug. 23 racing on the Fraser River in Steveston against some of the best talent in B.C.
In the midst of strong currents and tide changes, the three teams paddled strongly and enthusiastically.
Mixed team the McKenzie Mussels, drove their boat to a second place silver medal finish in the ‘D’ championship race, having come first in their semifinal race against five other teams.
The Mussels have competed in Hong Kong and more recently in Seattle.
Sea Gals, the women’s competitive team, advanced to the ‘A’ consolation and placed second in the final championship race.
Overall the team ranked eighth out of 21 teams. Sunshine Dragons Abreast placed second in the ‘B’ consolation round and used the day as a practice run for their upcoming participation in the Sarasota, Fla. International breast cancer survivors’ regatta.
