HMB alumni celebrates 20 years on the pitch

Men's soccer

The Halfmoon Bay Men’s Football Club celebrated its 20th season on Sunday, Sept. 21, with a well-attended alumni match and barbecue under glorious sun at Connor Park.

The club, started in 1994 by members of the Halfmoon Bay volunteer fire department, and now composed of players from Gibsons to Halfmoon Bay, played to a tough 4-3 win over Sita’s in their league match on Friday night so the alumni game could be played on Sunday.

The current squad squared up against a team of mostly grey but crafty alumni who showed more than enough skill and poise to make up for any failing fitness. Many could certainly still hold a starting spot in the regular team and some could qualify for the over 30s two times over.

This was a crew that clearly missed their weekly run-out on the soccer pitch and who wanted a victory to savour until next year. The game was played in a wonderful spirit with both teams going for the win. Eventually the current squad came out on top.

Word on the sidelines was the alumni were afraid a win would have resulted in too much pressure to return to weekly duties, and thus they graciously allowed their hosts to go ahead so everyone could get on with the food, drink and catching up to follow.
