Doerksen wins in Kelowna

SPORTS IN BRIEF

Gibsons Kimberley Doerksen finished first overall at the Wine Country Half Marathon in Kelowna over the Sept. 6 weekend.

The Kelowna race is the only one of the series to be held outside the United States, and runners come from both the U.S. and Canada to enjoy the scenic course through apple orchards, farms and vineyards.

Last year she won first place for women and set the course record for women of 1:18:04. This year she wanted to beat her own time, and she succeeded, finishing with a time of 1:15:55.

Coho swim

The Sunshine Coast was well represented at the recent Coho Swim in North Vancouver.

David Barnum was first overall with a time of 18:01 in the 1.5km event while Sa Boothroyd was the second female finisher in the 3km event in a time of 46:13 followed closely by Darcie Montgomery in a time of 46:53.

Scorpions open season

The Sunshine Coast U16 Rep Scorpions started their season with a tough battle against the Marpole Lions in Vancouver last weekend.

After losing five players during the summer, the team pulled together well because of strong efforts by new players Jake Simkins, Bryce Pierre, Wyatt Baldwin and Xavier Benjamin. Returning player Philip Fogarty held steady in defence along with keeper Keeran Peel while Liam Rankin played steady both in back and forward positions.

The Scorpions held control of the game due to solid tackling, footwork and passing by Finn Rogers, Evan Griffin and Ben Luporini. Despite shots by strikers Jordan Kammerle and Duncan Armstrong, along with mid-field attempts from Liam, the Scorpions were unable to hit the back of the net and, in the final minutes of the game, the Lions managed to score a goal.
