Two members of the Sunshine Coast Boxing Club took part in the World Boxing Councils Canadian Amateur Boxing Championships in Mississauga, Ont., Friday, Oct. 17.

No boxers from Gibsons were part of the Western Canadian team this year, but club founder Rick Shannon was invited as a referee and judge while his wife Kathy Christ was named Team Western Canada manager in the spring.

“Since June, Kathy donated hours of her own time organizing travel, hotels and all the fine details to make the trip as easy as possible for the 20 team members,” Shannon said.

This was Shannon’s third national championship, once as a coach and twice as a referee and judge.

Boxers from B.C. won six of nine title bouts in the senior category showing the calibre of boxing that Coast boxers face in competition.

The icing on the cake for Shannon and Christ was meeting Canadian boxing legend George Chuvalo who took time to sign autographs and have his picture taken with all who asked.
