Coast athletes shine at provincials

TRACK AND FIELD

The Chatelech team was small, but clearly present at the recent B.C. high school track and field championships in Langley, May 30 and 31.

Junior shot putter Theo Kontekakis threw 13.12m to gain Chatelech’s only podium spot with a silver medal.

Chatelech’s first ever and zone five champion senior men’s 4x400 relay team finished fifth in their heat and 20th overall in one of the most fiercely contested events of the weekend. The team of Caleb Burnham, Alex Nightingale, Joshua Desrochers and Jordan Wilson shaved one second off their qualifying time to finish in 3:45.83.

Alex also raced in the senior men’s 800m preliminaries, going out faster than planned to lead the first lap in 58s, then fade to fourth in the second lap. He still matched his best time of 2:09.

Grade 8 runner Elliot Wadge worked hard in the gruelling 3,000m, surrounded by a large field of equally determined young men.
The Chatelech athletes were exposed to high calibre, big school competition for the first time and did not flinch. Running coach Larry Nightingale and conditioning coach Mokie Burnham were thrilled with their performance.

Elphinstone athletes were also strong last weekend. In the senior men’s 100m final, Felix Rankin finished with a time of 11.04 to pick up a silver medal.

In the Grade 8 women’s 800m final, Lucy Shick finished in seventh place, while Sally Lim finished sixth in the Grade 8 javelin finals.

In the Grade 8 women’s high jump, Georgia Aleong just missed out on a medal, finishing in a three way tie for fourth place.
