Chatelech sixth at golf provincials

A soggy two days of competition saw the Chatelech golf team finish in sixth place at the 2013 AA high school golf provincials May 26 to 28, at the Arbutus Ridge Golf Club in Cobble Hill on Vancouver Island.

Chatelech had a practice round on Sunday afternoon after a long ferry trip over to the Island. It was the first time anyone on the team had played the course.

It was crucial for the players to see the course layout, the greens and the pin placements for the tournament, said head coach Quinn Campbell. Arbutus Ridge is a challenging layout with narrow fairways, numerous sharp dog-legs, bunkers and water hazards galore, and an island green on a long par 3.

Campbell said the weather for round one on Monday was absolutely atrocious.

It rained non-stop the entire round and made the scoring conditions extremely difficult, he said. That being said we persevered and played well, despite the challenging weather.

After the first round, Chatelech was in fourth place.

Tuesday's round two was played in much better weather, only light showers and rain off and on, but the course was soaked and muddy, said Quinn. Again we played solid and we finished sixth overall, just three strokes out of fifth and nine strokes behind fourth. Overall, we're thrilled with our finish, and had a great three days of golf, in spite of the winter-like conditions. The AA provincials are in Osoyoos next year, and we're hoping to get back to the event again, but in warmer and drier conditions.

The scores for the tournament included: Jacob Bland (80-81) 161, Andrew Flockhart (78-83) 161, Avery Struck (87-83) 170, Keenan Flemming (85-85) 170 and Jordy Fawcett (86-90) 176.
