Athletes place well at Summer Games

Sports in Brief

A number of athletes from the Sunshine Coast fared pretty well at the recent BC Summer Games in Nanaimo.

Among the best results was the zone 5 Vancouver-Squamish baseball team where Tim Walters won a silver medal after the team lost to the Fraser Valley in the final.

In track and field, Georgie Aleong was eighth in high jump and 13th in 200m hurdles, while Liam Rankin was 13th in the boys 100m.

Jordan Allen and Teagan Howden finished sixth on the girls softball team. Bradley Huddlestone finished fifth on the boys volleyball team and Gabriel Chamberlain, Jacob Huson and Justin Macey played on the boys lacrosse team, but did not place in the medals.

The Games were held in Nanaimo July 17 to 20. More than 2,400 athletes competed at 19 different sports in venues across Nanaimo, Duncan and Parksville during the three days. The Games serve as an essential development opportunity for those athletes who strive to compete at the national and international level.

Adult tennis

The Suncoast Racquet Club in Sechelt has some great deals for adult players this summer.

New to the game? Then why not try beginner tennis and learn the basics in four evenings from Aug. 11 to 14 from 8 to 9:45 p.m. You don’t even need to own a racquet.

Adult intermediate lessons are also being offered on Aug. 12 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and Aug. 14 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

For more details and to register, call the club at 604-885-7770 or email club coach Jacques Joyal at joyal.jacques@yahoo.ca.

At the Canadian cross country championships in Ontario July 19, Sechelt’s Kris Sneddon was 12th in elite men.

Senior golf

Two golfers from the Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club participated in the B.C. Senior Men’s Championships at Christina Lake.

Trevor Daley finished tied for 33rd after rounds of 74, 77 and 76, while Greg Kocher fired rounds of 83 and 76. He did not make the cut for the final round.
