Arena Bowl attracts big numbers for Coast tournament

Pickleball

On Saturday, Aug. 23, the Sunshine Coast Regional District and the Sunshine Coast Pickleball Association co-sponsored an “open” pickleball tournament at Sechelt’s Arena.

The tournament attracted 56 doubles teams, and 75 players who competed on seven courts for gold, silver, and bronze medals in nine skill categories.

Mayor John Henderson welcomed the participants and spectators, and presented several medals. By the conclusion of the tournament, Sunshine Coast teams won gold medals in four of the nine categories, and took away silver and bronze medals in all but two categories.

“We are delighted that so many players and spectators from the Lower Mainland travelled here for this event,” said Karen Renfrew of the Sunshine Coast Pickleball Association. “The SCRD was a great partner, and so were the local businesses who generously donated food and beverages. Next year, this tournament will be sanctioned by Pickleball Canada, and that could mean a two-day affair.”
