A competitive, fun-filled event

Many tie-breakers were played, dozens of aces were served, numerous lobs were run down and good-natured camaraderie prevailed at the Suncoast Racquet Club's Annual Fall Open Tennis Tournament Oct. 4 to 6.

Many tie-breakers were played, dozens of aces were served, numerous lobs were run down and good-natured camaraderie prevailed at the Suncoast Racquet Club's Annual Fall Open Tennis Tournament Oct. 4 to 6.

Congratulations to the finalists and winners of the tournament that saw more than 30 players (club members as well as non-members) participate. The successful men's doubles champions were Friedl Bruderman and Darcy Ludwar, who defeated Terry Kvam and Marte Metcalfe. Women's doubles winners were Shelley Lawrence and Sandra Watt over Marian Shoemaker and Karin Tigges. Johnny Lam was the men's singles champion. Marian Shoemaker and Darcy Ludwar defeated Paul Meyer and Janet Powell in the mixed doubles that ended in a three set tie-breaker 11-9.

A highlight of the weekend was a dinner complete with a rather raucous silent and live auction of items that garnered $2,800 toward the Racquet Club. Thanks to Marian Shoemaker and her volunteers, the weekend was a huge success with a good time enjoyed by players as well as the fans behind the glass.

Suncoast Racquet Club is a member-run, community-minded facility. In October, the public is invited to TennisMania events that include a School Pro-D day bootcamp on Oct. 25, an open house with a free family play day Oct. 26, and adult public play and barbecue on Oct. 27. (Please note that clean court shoes are required.)
