United stays unbeaten in 2015

Rep soccer

Sunshine Coast United FC took on South Burnaby’s Dog Pile in Vancouver last weekend and came home with a big 3-1 victory.

These two teams battled hard, but United scored first off a quick pass from Owen Watson to Sierra Ryden who charged to the net firing one right past the Dog Pile keeper.

Taiyo Blackwell and Owen Watson both had great opportunities to score, but with heavy traffic in front of the Dog Pile net, it was Sierra who dug hard to tap the ball in, making it 2-0.

In the second half the Dog Pile came out fighting, but United’s strong defensive line of Julian Woodin, Kai Maniwa Brodie, Alex Hart and Colby Elson fended them off.

Forwards Diego Bajger, Brett Bjornson, Callum Christiansen and Sierra kept the pressure on with Sierra adding one more to complete the first hat trick of the season.

A short time later goalie Cameron Wentzell was put to the test making several great saves, but the Dog Pile persevered and was able to sneak one by with 10 minutes left in the game.

Next home game is this Saturday, Jan. 24 at Picadilly Field.

U16 boys

After several successful games playing short players, the U16 Scorpions had a full team of players last Saturday afternoon in a 1-0 win over SBM Strikers in Burnaby.

Keeran Peel had an outstanding game. “The best of my life,” he declared and his teammates, coach Rod Kammerle and the spectators all agreed.

It was a tough first-half, but Finn Rogers, Bryce Pierre, Jacob Simkins and Ben Luporini worked out wide to cut off advances attempted by the Strikers. Keegan Inkster was back after a long absence and making the sliding tackles he is famous for. Philip Fogarty was consistent in defence, as usual, and Liam Rankin switched up and back with Jordan Kammerle.

In the second half, the Scorpions got into their groove and picked up the pace of the game significantly. Evan Griffin, Xavier Benjamin, Duncan Armstrong and Everett August moved the ball expertly up the field and kept the pressure on throughout the half. Jordan Kammerle scored a beautiful goal partway through the half and the entire team worked hard to make sure they maintained the lead until the final whistle.

The next game for the Scorpions is this Saturday, Jan. 24 at Kinnikinnick at 11:30 a.m.

U12 girls

Storm hosted Vancouver Sublime last Sunday, Jan. 18 at Picadilly Park with Vancouver pulling out a 2-1 win.

Sublime opened the scoring in the first half, but it was quickly tied 1-1 when Faye Duffy put one past Sublime’s keeper.

Great goaltending by Pippa Boothroyd and Mary Wood kept the game tied until late in the second half when Sublime was awarded a penalty kick on a handball in the box and they converted for the one-goal win.

Before running off to catch the ferry, Sublime was treated to a fabulous barbecue lunch thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Storm parents.
