Ellen Fallis (number 14) drives to the hoop for the layup for the Douglas College Royals, who recently won the provincial championships for the first time in 23 years.

It might be coincidence, but for the first time in 23 years the Douglas College Royals women’s basketball team has won the PacWest Conference, and the girls won the gold with a Gibsons player on the court.

Former Elphi grad Ellen Fallis was scouted by the Royals back in 2013 and she’s worked her way up the ranks to play guard this year. In that position she earned 14 points for the Royals in their gold medal game against the Capilano Blues, March 4, which ended 70-63 for the Royals.

Ellen was named a tournament all star after that game and this week the team is trying their luck at the national level, playing for the Canadian title in Edmonton.

Mom Anne-Marie is very proud of her daughter’s accomplishments on and off the court.

Ellen’s pulling high marks in criminology while making waves as a guard for the Royals.

“She was awarded something they call best in class because she’s a high achieving student as well as a high achieving athlete,” Anne-Marie said.

Ellen recently used her basketball training and experience to influence an initiative she wrote for her criminology course that’s getting some attention.

“She came up with an initiative to address gender inequality and it was recognized by her professor and forwarded on to the police commissioner to be considered,” Ann Marie said.

“We’re really proud of her. She’s doing some really neat things.”
