Four gymnasts from the Sunshine Coast braved temperatures in the mid- to high 30s to compete in the inaugural Whistler Summer Classic Gymnastics Tournament, which took place mostly outdoors on the weekend of June 27. The athletes were accompanied by their coach, Brian Fong, and club director Iris Fan, who owns Marble Gymnastics Academy in Selma Park.

The girls trained at the Whistler Gym Club for a couple of hours in order to get used to the equipment they would be using. Coach Brian had been prepping the girls for several months, teaching them their individual routines and encouraging them to push themselves and strive to perform their personal best.

Most of the events (except floor routines) were held outdoors at the Spring Creek School, where organizers moved and set up the equipment on the day before the meet. There were spray bottles, sprinklers, and buckets of ice to help keep the athletes and spectators as cool as possible in the hot sun.

Each athlete was given a plaque and a certificate that rated their performance in each of their events. The local athletes, Julia Savage, 13, Shawna McGeachy, 12, Maci Paul, 12, and Mersadies Mack, 11, competed in three events: floor, trampoline, and double mini-trampoline. The girls performed very well in their events and enjoyed the challenge of performing for a large audience.
