Gibsons confirms curling club can stay put until 2031

Facilities

Council has confirmed its support for renewing the Gibsons Curling Club’s lease on the rink on Gibsons Way, opening the way for the club to secure a gaming grant for an upgrade to the building dehumidifier system.

The club has undertaken significant upgrades to the facility, and was able to get a $50,000 Canada 150 infrastructure grant as well as support from private donors and the Town for replacement of the ice-making equipment last year.

That project cost about $160,000 and the new dehumidifier system will be almost as expensive at around $100,000.

The current lease expires in 2021, but to qualify for the gaming grant they need to be able to show they’ll be in the facility for at least 10 more years.

Councillors voted Sept. 19 to draft a letter approving the planned work and, even though the lease renewal is automatic, supporting the renewal for the 10 years beyond 2021.

“They’ve been a good tenant and taken very good care of that asset,” said Mayor Wayne Rowe.
