Blues win bronze in California

Minor Hockey

The Sunshine Coast Atom Rep Blues were California dreaming last week, picking up a bronze medal at the California State Winter Games in Carlsbad.

Overall, the Blues posted a record of 2-0-2 and had the lowest team goals against average in the eight-team tournament.

The Blues had a record of 1-0-2 in the round robin, playing against teams from Colorado, Arizona and San Diego, which placed them second in their pool.

They then beat a team from Boulder, Colo. in the bronze medal game 5-4.

The Blues, who were the lone Canadian team at the event, showed why hockey is Canada’s game, sporting Team Canada jerseys and socks complete with the mighty Maple Leaf and shone bright like the Northern Lights in the skills competition.

Oliver Tulk won the accurate shot, Cameron Ross was in the breakaway competition, Desmond Anderson in speed skate and Charlie Dempster in goal for the breakaways. The Blues also took first place in the team all-around for the skills contest.

It was an amazing weekend for all the players, coaches and parents who have been fundraising for the trip all year long. A big thanks to coaches Paul Pipke, Brad Wingfield, Randy Tulk and Eoin Ross, team manager Joanne Maconnell and the Sunshine Coast community for all their support in helping the team make the trip.

The players included: Oliver Tulk, Kayen Agnew, Rocky Nordvie, Jacob Wingfield, Desmond Anderson, Cameron Ross, Jack Malnarick, Dylan Drope, Wyatt Rowland, Isaac Carroll, Luca Enthoven, Eric Stinson, Grayson Lewis and Charlie Dempster.
