Gibsons outrigger canoe paddler Tamas Mihalyi came first in team V-6 and also in solo OC-1 on April 28-29 in Victoria in the Barges National Sprints Race. Organized by the outrigger club in Victoria, the race utilized the IVF sprint standard format – 500-metre straightaway races and 1,000-metre three-buoy turn races on a 250-metre course on Elk Lake, near the Victoria City Rowing Club. Mihalyi has been paddling outrigger canoe at Gibsons Paddle Club since 2012. In July he will represent Canada in Tahiti in the 2018 IVF World Sprints Championship as a member of the Elite National Men’s Team in V-6 (six-man outrigger canoe) and in solo V1 (rudderless single outrigger canoe) in Master50 and Open Age categories.
