Roberts Creek has once again sprouted another group of local musicians in the form of Robotic Horse Mechanical Sun.
Their sound is groovy, fuzz folk, laid back, styly-retro roots-oriented, original material. From instrumentals like Dwizzlin' and Attack of the Jelly Fish to full throttle cuts like Hay is for Horses and Klezmer Love Ballad, the band has assembled an evening's worth of material worthy of a listen and a good toe tap. The band is Brenny Fitsimmons, Jeff Doran, Andrew Bate, Jamie Swann and Jason Lambing.
They look forward to entertaining all who attend this Saturday, Jan. 19, at 8 p.m. at the Gumboot Café. Spend a few bucks on the horse.
Dance In
Join Verna Chan for a night of dance fitness with great dance tunes and tasty mocktails at the Eric Cardinall Hall in Gibsons this Friday, Jan. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Wear what you want and bring your friends for a workout with no choreography - a night of dancing without cheesy pick-up lines and drinking. This is a joint production of The Garage and Nirma Yoga who would like to make this an occasional or monthly event. There is a $5 drop-in fee.
Baby Harry
Antoine Baby Harry brings his rock and soul show to the Lighthouse Pub in Sechelt this Friday and Saturday. Baby Harry acted in his first movie role in 2007 and you might see him on TV with actors such as William Shatner and Reese Witherspoon. But music is still number one with him.
Jam
All are invited to an open jam at the Gibsons Legion this Saturday, Jan. 19, at 7 p.m. Your hosts are Dr. Underpants and Lightning Lou. Bring your own instruments. No cover.
Songs at Show
Mezzo soprano Patricia Hammond will perform a few songs with Ken Dalgleish on piano at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery (431 Marine Dr.) this Sunday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. Hammond is visiting her family on the Sunshine Coast while doing a series of mini concerts in B.C. in care homes and other centres. As a friend of the late Eve Smart, she will sing in honour of the Eve Smart Retrospective show currently at the gallery. All are welcome and refreshments will be offered.
Liverpool
The SC Film Society presents Liverpool, a Canadian comedy/thriller by director Manon Briand, in French with English subtitles, at the Heritage Playhouse on Monday, Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
When Emilie, a shy, waif-like coat-check attendant in a Montreal bar ("Liverpool") decides to take an unclaimed coat back to its owner, she is drawn into a criminal, comedic and romantic intrigue. A new and refreshing take on traditional movie genres, Liverpool extols the virtues of love, loyalty, the pursuit of truth and justice - to say nothing of the power of social media. Doors open at 7 p.m. Single event costs $8 and members pay $5.
Annie Lou
Annie Lou Genest's band, Annie Lou, is playing at the Gumboot Café on Monday, Jan. 21, at 8 p.m. The Juno-nominated musician plays banjo and fiddle in a folk/roots act. Tickets are $20 at the door.
Harbour painting
A group of artists that includes Ann Willsie, Nancy Hache and Donna Swain will beoffering a variety ofpainting workshops in acrylics and oils, from beginners tointermediate, week-long and weekend courses, to help you get your paint brushes out and paint with bravado. They begin on Jan. 22. The Harbour painting workshops will be held at Zocalo in Gibsons. For registrations and questions, call Donna at 604-885-5047.
Java Jazz
A newly-formed vocal jazz sextet, Java Jazz, under the able direction of Karen Edgar, will be performing at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. This group has a repertoire of easy-listening jazz and show tunes. They will be accompanied by Walter Martella on piano and Ron Thompson on guitar. Special guests will be vocalists Jacquie Allen, Robyn Edgar and Jim Edgar.Also featured will be the Sha-Boomers with their close vocal harmonies and zany antics.
