Please educate yourself on the facts

In response to the letter from Bonnie Nicol (Coast Reporter, Jan. 4), with all due respect, it would be advisable for you to know something about Canada's gun control laws prior to lecturing your member of Parliament.

Canadians are not legally allowed to own magazines containing more than 10 rounds of centre fire ammunition. Canadians are also not legally allowed to own true assault rifles or high capacity magazines.

So, here is the challenge: educate yourself and make common sense statements based on the facts, not your uneducated opinions.

Canadian gun owners (read: law abiding citizens who generally make contributions to their communities, families, country, etc.) cannot comprehend how someone could commit the atrocities we hear about in the U.S. The issue Americans have to deal with is mental health, not gun control.

Most Canadian gun owners are happy to discuss the issue, but you can see how hard it is to have a reasonable discussion when many Canadians don't understand what the laws are.

Hopefully most Canadians realize that we do have a good system in place, and that further regulations of legal gun owners doesn't protect anyone.
