The Pender Harbour Secondary School senior girls' basketball team is on a roll.
The Sakinaws beat Mount Currie, Barriere and Burns Lake to win a tournament in Barriere last weekend. Dani Pazur and Solveig van Wersch were named tournament MVPs.
Last week before the tournament, Pender played host to Powell River and won 53-43.
Dani led the way with 19 points while Nadine Jay-Reid had 14 and Solveig added 10.
Coach Earl Antilla said the game was very physical, with neither side willing to give up an inch.
The junior boys played their first game of the season and played well as they lost to Powell River 55-51. The Sakinaws were short-handed for the fourth quarter as two of their six players fouled out of the games. Jordan Haines led the scoring with 30 points while Jordan Kammerle scored 12.
The Elphinstone juvenile boys hosted their Cougar Classic tournament last weekend in Gibsons.
The eight-team field included Chatelech, the Elphi Grade 8 team, Argyle, Rockridge, Handsworth, Sentinel and Unity Christian.
Sentinel won the tournament with a 73-37 drubbing of Handsworth in Saturday night's final.
Elphi finished third with a 56-53 overtime thriller over Unity Christian.
Rockridge finished fifth with a 65-30 win over Chatelech and Argyle finished seventh after they defeated the Elphi Grade 8s 40-18. See the sports ticker below for all the game scores.
Earlier in the week the Cougars lost 73-41 to Sentinel to slip to 3-2 in league play.
In junior boys action, Elphi lost 79-69 to Sentinel on Jan. 14 to slip to 2-4 on the season, while Chatelech lost 58-48 on the road against Windsor on Jan. 14 to drop to 0-6 in league play.
The Elphi senior boys had a big week, continuing their strong play. They beat St. Thomas Aquinas 89-74 and Howe Sound from Squamish 82-50 to move to 3-0 in league play and 17-6 overall.
Still looking for their first win of the season, the Elphi bantam girls rallied in the fourth quarter in a home game against Brooks (Powell River) Jan. 20, but lost by five points, 36-31.
Sparked by several steals and four layups by guard Ingrid Hansen, the Cougars whittled down a 14-point deficit by going on a 13-4 run to end the game.
