Would pay for service

Editor:

I am happy to read that the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) is exploring and considering alternate ways to reduce the burden on the Sechelt landfill site (Coast Reporter, Jan. 16). However, I think the proposal to explore adding alternate options of recycling leads one to believe the current recycling (blue bin) system is maximized. In fact, more can and should be done to include the areas outside Sechelt.

I have been waiting for years to have curbside recycling. This notion was almost a reality until the MMBC system was enacted last year. Now I drive farther to recycle and recycle less plastic.

The article states 25 per cent of garbage collected is recyclable. How much of this is a result of the current system being inconvenient and too much work? I see many tagged extra bags of garbage in my neighbourhood, probably containing a lot of recyclable material.

The audit revealed several recyclable items being disposed of in the landfill, such as newsprint and cardboard.

I am for green waste recycling, but biodegradable items are not the problem. The problem lies with the items that do not readily break down.

If the SCRD truly wants to divert 65 to 69 per cent of garbage, they will explore ways to bring curbside recycling to areas outside the city. I know many people who do not recycle due to the current set up and lack of access. I would be happy to pay for even a monthly service if it means continuing to recycling.
