Unfair to allow rezoning

Generally I stay out of the political fray, but I feel compelled to advise homeowners on the Sunshine Coast, and particularly in Roberts Creek, of a disturbing development.

A rezoning application has been submitted by a property owner who has been operating an art gallery for more than four years out of their home, even though it is located within R1 zoning.

The proposed bylaw will allow commercial businesses like art galleries to operate within the R1 zoning under a proposition called the residential art gallery, originally submitted as residential commercial gallery.

In addition, the rezoning would also allow live music. And, as if that isn’t enough, the taxpayers are paying for a study to determine what decibel levels are acceptable (according to a recent Sunshine Coast Regional District meeting).

One of the hallmarks of living in Roberts Creek is the enjoyment of peace and quiet. I fear that this proposed zoning change would alter that enjoyment significantly and have an adverse effect on the rural ambience of Roberts Creek.

It is unfair to residents who purchased homes with R1 zoning to subject them to the comings and goings of cars, people and the hubbub of the four live music events allowed at these galleries each year. This is why commercial zoning exists — to group these sorts of uses together, away from residential areas.

I am extremely upset and concerned at what this may mean for the enjoyment of my home and overall property values.
