Take a look at what we have

Every time I drive into Gibsons the view of the North Shore Mountains just wows me. I would hate to see big apartment complexes blocking the view of those mountains. And the uniqueness of Lower Gibsons and the harbour never fails to impress me and make me glad to live here.

I find it really hard to comprehend how some people are so blasé about what an exquisite community we live in. I hope people really take a good look at what we have before it is irrevocably changed forever. The focal point of the harbour will be a big-block hotel complex.

It will certainly change the look and feel of the village. Is The George to be the saviour of the local economy? Is it going to make up for the huge increases in fuel and ferry costs? Personally I don’t drive as much or take the ferry as much, but apparently that will change once we have The George.

This area has always depended to a great deal on discretionary spending, and with the increase in travel costs, the increase in housing costs, the decrease in middle income wages, the continuing uncertainty of the world economy, there is not very much discretionary capital out there.

On the other hand, the Squamish Nation said they want to start investing here. A great spot for The George would be on their land, just east of Armours Beach, and it would not block any views. It would give the Squamish Nation a starting point and it would bring a big influx of cash to this area.

I am in favour of The George, but not to the detriment of Gibsons harbour.

Please people, take a long hard look at what we’ve got.
