Say yes to a smaller hotel

In his letter to the editor (Coast Reporter, Sept. 12), Wayne Wagner claims that he has talked to 230 people, with about 97 per cent in favour of a hotel.

While I question the percentage, I agree there is general support for the idea of a boutique hotel on Gibsons waterfront. However, from the many people I have talked to, it is support for a smaller hotel, such as the current official community plan suggests.

Despite the developer’s inflated and debatable claims that he needs the size to succeed, there are dozens of examples of thriving smaller hotels all around the region.

I often mention Brent-wood Bay Inn, and there are many more. We have been presented with a ‘take it or leave it’ proposal which does not add up when you look at all the impacts carefully.

Good architecture and planning is respectful of the context into which it builds. Gibsons Harbour is one of the most beautiful settings in the world.

Our branding as a small seaside village, and the ‘Beachcombers Town’ is world famous still. There is a large residential neighbourhood close by.

Future development that respects and enhances these qualities is in our long-term best interest.  The George will obliterate this history and context, and open the door to a wall of condos all along the waterfront.

Say yes to a beautiful, smaller hotel, which truly enhances our waterfront. Such a hotel is viable, and would provide many of the jobs and  benefits we want.

Everyone is in favour of that.
