Praise for our medical system

Two weeks ago a pair of paramedics bundled a 250-pound barely breathing lump into the back of an ambulance in the dead of night and took me to St. Mary’s Hospital in Sechelt. A short time later I was on a helicopter to Lions Gate Hospital where I was fitted with a pacemaker.

The experience left me with a profound respect for our medical system and the men and women in it. Everything happened as it should and when it should even my ride back home was at my bedside at the appointed minute. So to the paramedics who picked me up, the nurses and doctors who correctly diagnosed the problem and kept me going, the helicopter crew who cheered me up by going along with my Apocalypse Now banter, thank you. As for the wonderful triage and recovery staff for whom nothing was too much trouble they will never pay you enough!

The sad part was that I rarely heard the words “thank you” amid the blood and gore of my stay, so I hope that this goes a little way to acknowledging that these people do God’s work on a daily basis.
