Re: proposed LNG development at Woodfibre

As a resident of Gibsons I am totally opposed to the development of any onshore LNG processing facilities at the old Woodfibre site and to a marine docking facility and LNG tanker traffic proximal to the communities of Squamish, Britannia Bay, Lions Bay and Horseshoe Bay.

The risks from an accidental discharge to these communities, the marine and onshore environment, and to the ferry facilities and ferry traffic — on which the communities of the Sunshine Coast rely — are simply much too high.

LNG developments such as that proposed for Woodfibre are likewise recklessly speculative and leave citizen-taxpayers highly vulnerable to natural gas price fluctuations and accident-related liabilities.

Unfortunately, B.C.-based LNG developments, reliant as they are on hydraulic fracking, are nightmares to Interior watersheds and communities that are simply being whitewashed.

On the other hand, opportunities for developing renewable, sustainable energy sources in B.C. such as tidal, geothermal, passive solar and wind offer tremendous opportunities for B.C. domestic use and also export. It’s time to emphasize these opportunities and relegate fossil-fuel energy developments to the sunset they deserve.
