As if there were not enough unaddressed concerns about the impact of barging coal in our adjacent waters, now comes another.

A Health Canada advisory warns against over-consumption of fish due to rising levels of methylmercury, a neurotoxin, found in both fresh-water and salt-water fish, thought to be caused in part by the increased use of coal as an energy source worldwide. The alert is contained in an article by Dianne Britton, a registered dietitian, in a recent publication from the Alberta Retired Teachers’ Association.

The Health Canada advisory was triggered by new data from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

This is just one more reason for us to join the states of Washington and Oregon in rejecting this ill-advised project.
