Let the voters decide

As I read the letters to the editor this week, I couldn’t help agreeing with Judy Campbell that we should all “show our respect for the democratic process.”

She and I may disagree over whether the criticisms of the town planner made by an audience member at the July 15 council meeting were “outrageous” or rather accurate, but we both believe in showing support for the town’s bylaws and procedures.

For me, a return to democracy would start with not trying to ram through changes to the town’s official community plan out of deference to one particular developer. If there are changes that staff think genuinely need to be made, let the candidates in the coming election express their views on the proposed changes, and let the citizens consider those views before they vote.
