Re: “Something must be done” (Coast Reporter letters, Oct. 3)

While residents have the option to combine the BC Services Card with their B.C. driver’s licence, separate cards will always be an option. You have a choice whether to combine the cards.

If you choose to combine your BC Services Card to access different services, your privacy is still protected. For example, an ICBC employee or police officer will not have access to health records related to your BC Services Card, while a health care provider will not be able to see your driving record.

Prior to issuing or renewing a driver’s licence, ICBC is both authorized and required to obtain medical information. This information is for driver licensing purposes and is separate from ICBC insurance transactions.

ICBC also directs staff to make every effort to respect customer privacy. While most customers do not mind listing medical conditions when renewing a driver’s licence, ICBC will do anything they can for those who do have concerns. For example, a customer can be given the option of writing down their medical information rather than verbally disclosing it or having the conversation in a more private area.

This is all part of providing safe, secure and respectful driver licensing services for our customers.
