How can we make things better?

Like Wendy Gilbertson, (Coast Reporter letters, Aug. 8) I was somewhat surprised at the tone and content of the recent survey of District of Sechelt residents.

Most reputable surveys identify exactly who and what the work is for. As well, university or academic work (government surveys on health, for example) also often inform the respondents how to access the results of the polling.

However, I did smile with surprise when my own name was on the ‘do you recognize’ list.

I admitted to instant name recognition, but was a bit coy on just how favourable or unfavourable I viewed myself. I was raised to believe that modesty is always better than self-aggrandizement

The important part of Ms. Gilbertson’s letter — and the really sad and disappointing part — was her candid admission that we live in a town where some people actually fear speaking the truth to strangers on the telephone “for fear of reprisal.” This frank assessment by a long-term and relatively well-known resident lends substance to the reports of people being threatened, businesses being leaned on, citizens being told they are not welcome at public events and general bullying in unlikely places.

It is time for people who care about the social fabric of Sechelt to think seriously about how we can work to make Sechelt a better place for all.
