The significantly expanded and fully restored Davis Bay wharf was officially opened last Thursday, July 17, by Sechelt Mayor John Henderson in front of a huge crowd who all joined in the celebrations.

Funding for this project came from the District of Sechelt, Sunshine Coast community forest and Island Coastal Economic Trust. In addition to this funding, private and corporate donors contributed in excess of $170,000 — which was approximately 30 per cent of the total project cost. The Wharf Rats, led by Davis Bay resident Marg Pearson, managed this fundraising.

The vast majority of this $170,000 was raised locally with in excess of $45,000 raised through the sale of engraved plaques on planks on the wharf for $100 each. The community of Sechelt and the Sunshine Coast can take great pride in the restored wharf project, which will not only bring joy to the various users, new and old, it will also add economic benefit to the local area and beyond and be a potential catalyst for further investment and a source of great civic pride.

I was involved with the Wharf Rats in the fundraising and it was indeed a pleasure to work with this group of dedicated locals who started this project in the fall of 2012. To see it delivered last week is a credit to each and every one of the Wharf Rats and especially to each and every donor who gave so generously.

There are too many to thank individually; however, thanks to everyone who gave. The reward for everyone who did contribute will be long lasting and very tangible to the Sechelt community.
