Having recently moved to the Sunshine Coast, my wife and I have been told the importance of supporting local business. We’ve been vigilant to spend on the Coast. I would like to share one good and one not so good experience.

A local business in the retail and service sector comes to mind. The club we belong to wanted to have an event at their facility. I went to the business and asked about the procedure and was advised to send an email with my requirements.

I emailed my requirements and questions. After a week, there was no reply. I sent a couple of follow-up emails and finally did receive a response advising me they would get back to me in approximately one week. I patiently waited for their email. Without a reply, I sent another email and received a reply from the representative indicating they were no longer with the company.

Then over the next 14 days, I sent two emails to one of the management personnel. Once again, I received no response. Frustrated, I gave up.

This business by all accounts is very successful, well respected, locally owned and has received a significant amount of positive exposure both on and off the Sunshine Coast.

Recently we were in the Sechelt Starbucks for coffee. The barista suggested we might like to have a sandwich. Good upsell! As there was a bit of a delay preparing one of the sandwiches, the associate asked if we would like to split a Nanaimo bar compliments of Starbucks. That’s empowerment! The sandwiches were delicious as were the beverages and light dessert. I was impressed with the Starbucks experience.

Residents on the Coast talk about the lack of infrastructure and reliable transportation options to attract tourists and residents.

For now, let’s keep it simple and champion the basics. Good service!
