GABC stands up for many

In reference to Peggy Wright’s letter (“Who are the GABC?” Coast Reporter, Aug. 29) and her mission to discredit the GABC, I trust this letter will provide some answers to Ms. Wright so she can unburden herself of her odd preoccupation with the GABC and its members.

Our membership includes builders, landlords, musicians, merchants, lawyers, landscapers, writers, artists, editors, retirees, and stay-at-home parents, among many others.

In short, GABC comprises many individuals who have a keen interest in a variety of issues besieging our town, our area, Howe Sound, the Lower Mainland, and beyond. One of our goals is to inform our members with our on-line mail outs, and we hope to encourage our members to get out, show up, or write letters on a variety of topics such as the proposed changes to Gibsons’ official community plan, increased thermal coal shipments and LNG tanker traffic through our local waters, the Burnco gravel mine at McNab Creek, the proposed garbage incinerator in Port Mellon, Gambier Island logging proposals, and the proposed Kinder Morgan/Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, to name a few.

GABC also informs our members on developments regarding Howe Sound sustainability projects, local filmmakers producing independent films, and local events happening up and down the Coast regarding markets, film screenings, and rallies.

And yes, GABC has questioned many of the claims being promised by the George Hotel project. Shouldn’t our community be doing that? Shouldn’t we expect any developer to submit a project to the Town that reasonably conforms to the current OCP and bylaws? When has it become socially unacceptable to ask questions and expect honest accurate answers?
