Eagles fly and remember

Last Tuesday, Nov. 11 my wife and I attended the Remembrance Day ceremony in Sechelt. This year’s commemoration was notable for a small, but moving vignette that added a poignancy to the occasion.

The bugle notes of the Last Post had just died away and the moment of silent remembrance was upon us. At that point, both my wife and I happened to look up into the brilliant blue sky over the cenotaph, and there were four eagles doing lazy circles about 200 feet directly above the cenotaph square.

I’m sure many others gazed up and noted this stirring sight. As I watched, one eagle dipped a wing low and another wing high, circling into the breeze. I am sure this was an eagle’s version of a victory roll. And the squadron of four eagles — could this not have been a “finger four” fly-past?

We have had RCAF fighter fly pasts on other Remembrance Days, but this one — nature’s commemoration — gave my heart a moment of joy.

To all those wonderful veterans, both living and dead: we (and the eagles) shall remember.
