Most of us agree that there should be zero tolerance for bullying in our schools. Why, then, do we put up with bullying in our streets?

There are signs in Sechelt with slogans against our present mayor. These appear to be a personal vendetta and don’t even pretend to focus on current issues. How do we expect to stop bullying in schools if we condone these inappropriate adult behaviours? Children and youth need adults, especially those in the position of leadership, to be positive, respectful role models.

Is this really how our beautiful community of Sechelt is going to run an election, using smear tactics and innuendoes? This election campaign needs to be based on a respectful discussion of facts and issues. Differing opinions are neither bad nor good, but the way we handle them reflects the true character of the person.

There is already enough misinformation being used against the current council, who have worked very hard and started a difficult ball rolling. They want, and we need, economic prosperity and jobs (yes, the ones that come from successful businesses), in order to attract families and young people to our town. The current mayor and council may not be perfect, but they have taken many positive steps towards these goals. Are we prepared to put up with dirty campaign tactics from those who appear to want to stop progress?

Let’s not forget that our children are our future and we all need to work together to ensure that Sechelt can provide them with opportunities to remain in their community.
