Prior to June 1, I was put on a waiting list for quadruple bypass surgery.

On June 1, I experienced chest pains during my morning chores. I called 9-1-1. The paramedics arrived within five minutes. I was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital and admitted.

The next morning, between 5 and 7 a.m., I experienced three angina attacks. I came through them with the help of a good nurse and morphine. This now fast-tracked me to the front of the list.

I waited a week and a half in St. Mary’s before being transferred to St. Paul’s for surgery. I was told by my doctor that I would be brought back from St. Paul’s in the same fashion. This not the case. St. Paul’s does not offer this service. St. Paul’s offered me a cab to Horseshoe Bay and I was on my own from there.

I had no money, only a pair of slippers, my PJ bottoms and a carryall bag. I was devastated.

Luckily my niece was not working at the time and was able to come pick me up and bring me home.

Be wary, off-Coast patients, and be prepared.
