This year’s local government elections are pivotal for many communities across B.C.

The Sunshine Coast is no exception.

But are we going to vote for or against?

While we each have our pet issues, let us make sure we vote for candidates who are thinking about our collective future. Are the candidates thoughtful in their approach to the kind of economic development that will truly sustain our communities and provide opportunities to retain our young people, or are they opposed to anything that might require change?

Simply put, are the candidates running for good things or against bad things?

Are they proposing to find workable solutions that reflect our community values and build bridges? Do they recognize we face a demographic shift towards an aging population and are seeking to balance that with opportunities for young families? Are they ready to pull up the drawbridge and thus prevent the innovation and development that could enhance and sustain our communities in years to come?

Are they saying stop? Or are they saying go, but with care.

We live in a vibrant and diverse community. Personally, I like to say yes to the good opportunities, not just say no to ideas I don’t fully understand. I like to offer solutions, not just whine about problems.

The candidates we elect now will affect our lives for four years. Let’s make sure we vote for candidates who want to sustain, enhance and build with care, not just stop, tear down or go backwards.
