Another unhappy ferry tale

We had guests recently from Germany and Richmond. They came on the bus and we met them at the Sechelt mall. They were impressed with the area, especially the whales in Davis Bay. We drove them to the 8:45 p.m. ferry.

At the ferry terminal, the toll booths were all closed, red lights on, and no traffic inside the terminal. We’ve never seen that in 40 years of living here! We looked online to make sure we had the right schedule. We did. There was no service announcement online, the customer service line said the offices were closed, and there was nothing on radio news stations — very embarrassing for us and most inconvenient for our guests.

Finally one of our guests went to the toll booth to ask when and if there was a ferry, only to be told by the woman in the booth that she didn’t know. She said they were trying to get the Queen of Capilano but didn’t know if they could. She said there could be a ferry in an hour, or it could be midnight.

It would have been helpful if BC Ferries had put a service announcement on their site, if the toll booth person could have been a little more helpful, or at least a scribbled note on the terminal fence would have been the polite thing to do for people relying on the ferry. A ferry finally arrived and our guests were on their way, an hour later than the scheduled sailing. A worker told us BC Ferries had cancelled that last ferry and then reinstated it!

What the?
