Sunshine Coast RCMP

Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for Sept. 16 to 22:

• On Sept. 16, a thief gained entry through an unlocked window into a residence in the 5600 block of Cascade Crescent in Sechelt. The thief rummaged through the house and stole both Canadian and U.S. cash, a pair of pearl earrings, and a woman's wedding band. The thief also attempted to steal an iPod, an iPad and a laptop, but these items were left in the backyard, so it appears the thief was interrupted and fled without the electronics. The file is still under investigation.

• In the afternoon of Sept. 16, a hit-and-run incident was reported in the 900 block of Gibsons Way. A witness had left a note with the suspect vehicle information on it for the complainant advising the suspect vehicle had backed into the complainant's vehicle. The damage was minimal, but there was paint transfer from the other vehicle. The file is still under investigation.

• Early on Sept. 17, police attended a single-vehicle accident northbound on Highway 101 near Homesite Creek, after a semi-truck and trailer ran into a herd of elk that ran out onto the highway.

Two elk were struck and fatally injured. The rest of herd fled into the bush and the truck, which sustained some minor damage, was able to continue on.

• On Sept. 17, police came upon a single-vehicle accident southbound on Highway 101 near Largo Road in Roberts Creek just after 6 p.m.

The driver, who managed to climb out of the flipped over vehicle on his own, advised that he had lost control on the corner, fish tailed and hit the ditch before flipping and landing on his roof. The driver, who sustained minor injuries, was issued a violation ticket for speed relative to conditions.

• Overnight on Sept. 15 and 18, vandals spray painted graffiti in black and pink paint on several walls of buildings in the 900 block of Gibsons Way.

Anyone with any information about this mischief is asked to contact RCMP at 604-885-2266 and reference file 14-6664.

• On Sept. 18, a mischief incident was reported on Lower Road near Cheryl Ann Park Road after a condiment bottle thrown out of a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction struck a vehicle.

The driver of the struck vehicle tracked the suspect vehicle down and confronted the occupants. One of the occupants admitted to throwing the bottle, which had burst on contact and caused a small dent on the hood. The matter is still under investigation.

• On Sept. 19, a hit-and-run accident occurred in the 400 block of Marine Drive in Gibsons after a blue vehicle backed out of a parking spot and struck another parked vehicle. The suspect driver did not stop or leave information for the parked vehicle owner, even though the collision left paint transfer and visible damage.

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact RCMP and reference file 14-6690.

• Overnight on Sept. 20, a thief gained entry into a fenced business property in the 900 block of Henry Road in Gibsons, using a crowbar to enter a building.

The suspect, who was caught on surveillance footage, is described as a Caucasian male, dressed in camouflage and wearing a camouflage Tilley-style hat. The suspect stole a computer tower, a cable TV box and a Digimerge DVR system.

Anyone with any information about this theft is asked to contact RCMP, reference file 14-6715.

• On Sept. 20, police attended a two-vehicle collision on Highway 101 near Veterans Road in Gibsons, after a northbound vehicle made a left turn and cut in front of a southbound vehicle. The collision rendered both vehicles undriveable, but fortunately, no major injuries were reported.

The driver of the northbound vehicle advised she had had trouble seeing due to the sun in her eyes and had made the turn not seeing the on-coming vehicle. A witness reported the northbound vehicle appeared to cut directly in front of the other vehicle. The driver of the northbound vehicle was issued a violation ticket for fail to yield right of way.

• On Sept. 20, a resident reported hearing loud metal crashing noises from the back of a business complex in the 900 block of Gibsons Way.

Police Dog Services was on scene immediately, followed by regular duty police shortly after, and came upon three male youth who were attempting to gain access into a business by breaking the rear door with a shovel and other tools. The three suspects fled on foot, but one was arrested and a second was located later at his residence. Police are still looking for the third suspect. The file is still under investigation.
