With the click of a mouse you can help Sunshine Coast Success by 6 top up their funding thanks to a new collaboration between the organization and the Sunshine Coast Credit Union (SCCU).

“[SCCU] are pledging $4 for every Facebook like to their page to Success by 6, up to a total of $2,000,” said the Coast’s Success by 6 coordinator Zarah Gale this week.

“It’s the first time that’s ever happened.”

Gale said SCCU came up with the idea as one of their members, Jodi Fichtner, sits on the Early Years Council, which is the group that decides how Success by 6 funds that come to the Coast are allocated.

“So every month she hears about the program and the need and the lack of funding. So she came up with the idea, and what we guaranteed was that the money would go directly to local children from birth to age six and their caregivers,” Gale said, noting a specific program to utilize the funding still had to be developed.

Success by 6 is a provincial early childhood development initiative meant to help give children up to age six a good start in life.

Success by 6 initiatives on the Coast include the early years fair, supporting parenting programs and facilitating childhood education conferences.

“Most of the funds go to programs that apply and meet our criteria that directly support children up to age six and their caregivers on the Sunshine Coast,” Gale noted.

She’s excited about the new collaboration with SCCU, saying it’s a great example of the kinds of partnerships Success by 6 is looking to develop locally.

“In previous years we’ve just been looking at bringing this money into the community and allocating it, but now we’re really focusing on raising awareness of the importance of the early years and collaborating in innovative new ways with different sectors on the Sunshine Coast,” Gale said.

The SCCU Facebook ‘likes’ fundraiser runs until the end of June.
