Sunshine Coast RCMP reported the following for April 9 to 16: On April 9, at approximately 1 a.m. a thief attempted to break and enter a residence in the 5700 block of Mermaid Street.

On April 9, at approximately 1 a.m. a thief attempted to break and enter a residence in the 5700 block of Mermaid Street.

One of the residents heard the suspect outside the house and called police. Upon arrival, police spotted a male suspect in the backyard that fled the scene by jumping over a hedge. A foot chase ensued, but police lost sight of the suspect.

The suspect is described as being approximately 5', 8", 150 to 160 pounds, and was wearing a black toque and red plaid jacket with dark pants. On April 9, a witness reported a possible impaired driver heading southbound on Highway 101 in Roberts Creek after the suspect vehicle almost forced the witness off the road. The witness provided a vehicle description and licence plate number and police located the suspect vehicle in Gibsons. The driver, who had an open bottle of wine in the vehicle, exhibited signs of intoxication and admitted to having consumed half a litre of wine shortly before driving. The driver failed two roadside alcohol-screening tests and was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition. His vehicle was also impounded for 30 days.

On April 9, between 8 a.m. and 4:45 p.m., a thief broke into a residence in the 5700 block of Spindrift Street in Sechelt, using a doggie door and stole several pieces of jewelry. The stolen items include a gold ring with a flower made of opals, a gold ring with a triangle-cut diamond embedded in it and 18-karat gold earrings shaped like the letter "C".

Sometime during the past week, a thief stole a large number of CDs and CD holders from an unsecured vehicle parked in the 1600 block of Field Road in Wilson Creek. No other theft or damage was reported.

On April 9 or 10, a thief broke into a residence in the 3600 block of Beach Avenue in Roberts Creek, likely gaining entry through an unlocked door. It is possible a resident was home during the theft.

The thief stole several pieces of jewelry as well as a few small jewelry boxes. The stolen items included a pair of long rectangular shaped gold earrings, a pair of earrings that has numerous loops joined together, a stretchy pearl bracelet, a chain with a glass heart pendant, two leather jewelry boxes, an oval wicker jewelry box, a small white oval ceramic jewelry box and a small jewelry box with a Native carving.

On April 12, two shoplifters were caught by staff at a business in the 900 block of Gibsons Way. The suspect youth were detained and the stolen property was recovered. After a warning from police, the youth were released to their guardians and banned from the business for one year.

On April 11, a witness reported an erratic driver heading southbound on Highway 101 from Sechelt. The driver passed vehicles on the double solid lines, running one vehicle off the roadway. The witness was able to provide a vehicle description and licence plate number and police observed the vehicle in Gibsons travelling at more than 40 km over the posted speed limit. The vehicle was pulled over and the driver advised he was on his way to catch the ferry. The driver was issued warning for drive without consideration and a violation ticket for speeding.

On April 12, on Highway 101 near Henry Road in Gibsons, police witnessed a northbound vehicle driving more than 30 km over the posted speed limit. The vehicle also crossed the centre line several times before police pulled it over. The driver, who exhibited signs of intoxication, failed two roadside alcohol-screening tests and was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The driver was also issued a violation ticket for speeding.

Between April 5 and 12, a vandal smashed a rear window of a vehicle parked in a parking lot near Wharf Road and Anchor Road in Sechelt. The vandal also disturbed the glove box, but nothing appears to have been stolen.

On April 15, a witness reported a possible impaired driving heading south on Highway 101 in Gibsons. The suspect vehicle swerved back and forth and was unable to maintain a straight line. Police located the vehicle in the ferry line-up and noted the driver exhibiting extreme signs of impairment. The driver passed a roadside alcohol-screening test, but failed a standard field sobriety test. The driver admitted to drug consumption an hour before driving and was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition.
